Holding Space.
Creating Place.
My Story
When my medical doctor asked me a question more than ten years ago, I admit my response was anger. I “fired” him.
After thinking about what I had been asked, I called my doctor’s office and asked if I could return. He said he would like to see me again. I went back and sat down in that familiar room with posters of the human body, a depression screening tool, and a variety of medical devices. He entered the room, sat down, welcomed me back, and asked again, “How are you going to participate in your recovery?"
I accept that “recovery” can mean many different things like healing, mending, improvement, sobriety, and renewal. Instead of firing him, I told him I had a plan. “I’m going to run a 5K.”
I realized my doctor only wanted me to succeed in my personal goals. He held space for me to figure out my goals. He created a place for me to be an ass, then to reflect, apologize, and get back to getting my health back.
Regardless of whether I am focusing on my mental or physical health, I now ask myself: “How am I going to participate in my recovery?”
